AFEA Congress is pleased to announce its participation in the fuTOURiSME Open Call selected Projects, an EU-funded initiative designed to support innovation, sustainability, and digital transformation among European tourism SMEs.
As part of the selected proposals in the SMEs funding open call of fuTOURiSME, AFEA Congress is implementing the MICE-VISION project, an initiative focused on enhancing our meetings and events management services through the integration of sustainable practices and digital innovation. Our project aims to further embed sustainability into our operational processes and event workflows, while leveraging digital tools to improve efficiency, transparency, and impact. Within the framework of the project, five distinct and complementary activities are being implemented, each addressing a key pillar of sustainable and digitally enabled MICE operations.
- Sustainable Certification of PCO
- Sustainable Event Certification
- Digital Solutions for Green MICE Operations
- Training and awareness for our team and partners
- Participation in Global Fair on Sustainable Tourism
Within the framework of fuTOURiSME and the MICE-VISION project, AFEA Congress also carried out a detailed measurement of the environmental footprint of a national scientific event, the 34th Panhellenic Pulmonology Congress, held in December 2025 in Athens. This assessment provided a practical evaluation of sustainability practices applied during the organisation of the event, generating measurable data on carbon emissions, water consumption, and waste generation per participant, following globally acknowledged standards. The analysis identified participant transportation, accommodation, and exhibition constructions as the main contributors to the overall footprint, establishing the 2025 congress as a baseline reference point for future targeted CO2eq reduction actions.
The carbon footprint of the event was offset, using carbon credits verified under the UN framework.
A central objective of MICE-VISION is the alignment of AFEA Congress operations with the GSTC-MICE standard, supporting our journey toward certification as a sustainable Professional Congress Organizer (PCO). This step reinforces our commitment to responsible event management and to meeting internationally recognized sustainability benchmarks within the MICE sector.
The fuTOURiSME program supports small and medium-sized tourism enterprises in developing and scaling innovative solutions that contribute to the twin green and digital transition of the tourism ecosystem. Through our participation, AFEA Congress continues to invest in future-oriented practices that strengthen both our services and the broader meetings industry in Greece.
